Healthy Living Parenting Tips: Healthy Routines

hi my name is Samantha and I'm a public health nurse from the Durham Region Health Department I'm here today to talk to you about healthy living parenting tips: healthy routines

So tip number one: spend time together Spending time together can help you and your family form bonds and gives you an opportunity to talk about your day You can role model healthy behaviors such as being active, to help your child develop basic movement skills needed to be active later in life You can decrease screen time and you can also eat less foods that are high in salt sugar fat, eat more vegetables and fruit and have fewer sugary drinks So tip number two: Build it into every day

! So make vegetables and fruit a part of your family's day You can do this by asking your child what healthy foods they want to eat that day You can keep mealtimes free of pressure, help children create positive and healthy eating habits by not using food as a reward or punishment and you can also eat at regular times You can build physical activity into your day by playing outside with your child You can do this by using structured or unstructured play

So tip number three: Get your child ready to learn! Eating healthy, being active and getting enough sleep can help your child learn by helping them to be settled and attentive So fuel up for the school day! To help your child have energy to learn it is important to have a healthy breakfast, lunch and snacks Walking to and from school will help prepare your child to learn during the day Playing after school, especially outdoors, can be a good way for the kids to refocus for homework and other evening activities Recommended sleep guidelines differ based on the age of the child: children 3 to 5 need 10 to 12 hours of sleep, children 5 to 13 need 9 to 11 hours of sleep and youth 14 to 17 need 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night

A happy bedtime routine could include: trying to use the time before bed to do a calming activity, maybe you guys can read a book together Tucking your child into bed helps them feel secure When you create new routines and stability children can foresee what's coming the next day Being active, eating healthy and getting enough sleep are important for people of all ages and abilities Thanks for joining us today and join us next time for our vlog on picky eaters
